When we arrived, two of the four walls were standing and the other two were lying in the field. The brief was a house for a shepherd's family, a budget that would not stretch to importing stone, and a client who was willing to try something.

The standing walls were repointed in lime and kept. The fallen walls were rebuilt from the fallen stone, and where that ran out we rammed the earth from the site into shuttered walls 500 mm thick, with a lime render on the weather side. The earth walls are warmer to the hand than the stone and the children have claimed those rooms.

The roof is larch, the windows are deep, and the whole house cost less per square metre than a timber kit.
