Ardnish Bothy

A one-room bothy on the west coast, rebuilt on the footprint of a ruin so that nothing new was taken from the hillside.

There is no road. Everything came in by boat and by hand, which decides most things about a building before you draw a line.

The ruin gave us the footprint and most of the stone. The walls went up dry, the way the original had, with a lime-pointed inner leaf for the wind; the roof is Ballachulish slate on larch sarking. Inside it is one room with a sleeping platform, a stove and a window the size of a door looking at the loch.

It is the project I go back to when I need reminding what enough is.
